Of Google and the Search for Meaning—Free Verse

As vaguely familiar words often enter my head

In times of silence and times of distraction,

I send my son to the shower,

And search for the meaning of the word ‘punim.’

And come up with every other meaning

For every other word starting with ‘p’

Because phonetic spelling of the words

I don’t know has never been my strong suit.

And the final finding of the meaning is a letdown

After Google mistook my spelling for the word ‘punanni.’

A free verse poem has no set pattern for line or stanza length. Rhyme is not used, or it is used sparingly. The line length and the rhythm or the lines are dictated by the natural rhythm of speech or other concerns such as emphasis on a particular word, image, or idea.

As American As—Flarf

This almost winter of apple pie and discontent

In some typology by using subs sign

Made of tightly packed snow, a rapid flow down a slope

Like fragments full of holes

Set off spontaneously from heavy equipment in action

Only given two parameters

.

We are together to be hazards to life and property

To fray the range of eternity

And teach forming a powder snow avalanche

And return anew in the grey

Though they appear to share some similarities

Faith in algebra can subtract

Any mountain range in spring or winter

Substring of almost winter

FLARF is a wild style of poetry that started as a joke. People noticed that no matter how bad your poems were Poetry.com would tell you that you had won their poetry prize. Then, they would try to scam you out of your money. So devious poets started sending the crappiest poetry they could write to Poetry.com. Even that would win the poetry prize. These poets began sending each other their crappy poems, and eventually it became a legitimate poetry style. If you want to read more about the FLARF or any of the other poetry terms, check out the glossary of poetic terms from the Poetry Foundation at: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/learn/glossary-terms

Most Rhyming Poetry Ever Written

Life is farting while I’m mowing

Queif and burp a symphony

Let the wind in grass a’growing

Blow like farts all over me.

.

Poems and cats are fornicating

Oddly distant in the past

While the things are complicating

The things I sing about my gas.

.

These things, the things I sing,

Ring and jingle, tingling

Whipping, hissing, snapping, popping,

Piping like a Russian King.

.

And in the end, the world, alas,

Rides like skid stains on my ass.

As Long as We Understand Each Other—Flarf

Could be, in my personal opinion,

They’d be horny little hookers

Or dull looking little bores

Waking to the field of green covers

Small and silvery distributed parts

Of bolt fastening hardware

Tucking their babies on the hill

Begging to be included

Unless insulted by the ask if it

And when looked in the eyes

Insulting though well-meaning

Like frosting spread too thick

Left in clumps and crumbles

And cooling by the window.

What to Know When Attending a Garth Brooks Concert—Flarf

How much does it cost

For a touch through the fence

And a bowl of mouse soup?

Will it be free for Tom?

.

See if G will tell you where the bodies are, Jill.

Buffalo hot sauce is the best.

Damn it, beat me to it.

What?

.

Don’t bring anyone’s mother into this.

A real BT animal.

I bet she has mushy purps.

.

Touch my hot sauce through the fence.

How’d you touch my waspes through the fence G?

He didn’t follow proto.

.

Drink lots of water

Just like the guys.

I’m getting turned up for my birthday.

.

You got bodies in high places.

Garth’s new hot sauce is the best.

I always use it on Uncle Norm’s poutine.

Find out What Happens During the Interceptor—Flarf

Twists and turns like salted pretzels.

Things that go on.

Things that don’t.

The revelation of the criminal or culprit.

How he is going to kill.

Will always kill.

.

Striking gold was the easy part

Like anything you’ve never seen.

.

An element of disseminated summary

Blabbering from a friend.

Many paths that can change the story.

Your guide to the latest plot twists

And surprise endings.

And Too Much Time on Their Hands—Flarf

Somehow, somewhere, a duck is watching you,

Parking in front of a liquor store,

Trying to pay for a tank of gas.

And it’s all just part of a capitalist plot

From folks with a dark sense of humor.

Things You See in the Dark—Flarf

The summer sky dark and milky

Like a coffee before you stir in the cream

Meteors under a completely dark sky

.

Your hair was midnight,

Dark and thick and greasy

And silvered in the starlight

.

And of all the rods in all the retinas

Your faint light happened to fall on mine

Bleached of living color

.

Red tinted glasses or goggles

Forcing your pupils to contract

A picture book for children 3 and up

.

Looking for creatures of myth

Like dinner by candlelight

And a startling display of contrasts

Articles of Faith

We hold these things to be true

The blue smoke that defies mourning

The mothers of violence

The breath of a lover

Who just rolled over out of a trance

.

We hold these things to our chests

Needy and hungry like a newborn child

Hungry for the lives that have already been given

Hungry for the lives that will be given

Hungry for the red ant hills in the green

That pop up like a case of festering boils on a feverish child

.

Curtains draw starving light

Opaqued lens projected

Images muffled ghosting

The silent red glow

Pinholes behind your eyes

.

It all starts again

Teacup on the windowsill

In the white haze of morning

Barefoot and broken

Spreading wings of blood

.

A paper creased microcosm

Replicating thousandfold

Private throne of time

The worth of a book

Breeding pages of life

.

Steaming forward into

Self-immolating sulfured hell

And you write about inner peace
