July Poem 4

The gills just under the cap

Were Athens Amphitheatre.

The stem,

The whole Amphitheatre

Was open to the fresh things

Like wood flecks and cow shit.

Well, the flecks were cow shit,

But Melvin’s were lined with citizens

Jockeying for seats.

The stadium seats

Were a carved lavender coating,

And they look like candle wax

With blue veins.
