How the Trees Invented Paper

The forest of philanthropists,

The council of oak, pine, and alder,

With its chorus of leafy minds

That shook in the breeze,

Were willing to give up

Their fibrous hearts

For fleshy lumps of pulp.

And be transfigured into

Thin sheets of crisp white

Suited for columns

Of black or blue strokes.
